The Birth of the Circuit
It follows from the second decade of the XXth century when a group of car enthusiasts from Vila Real organized some competitions, small car expertise, elegance contests and auto shows, immediately began to attract the attention and enthusiasm of the public, which showed a clear and close affinity with these type of events.
In 1931, with a pioneering act, the first edition of Circuit Vila Real Car took place, on June 15, carried out by the same committee of people who organized the city festivities, and thanks to the commitment that some local personalities, among which Aureliano Barrigas, put to this event. As the idea was already being designed from before, from 1930 was released in Vila Real a tax on every pound of meat in order to raise some money to cover the costs that the organization of the races involved. Thus, and counting with the support of the Regional Section of North Automobile Club of Portugal, in 1931 was born the first “Car Circuit of Vila Real”. With a total length of 7150 meters, the competitors would have to comply with 20 laps, which made a total of 143 kilometers.
FAX sent by the illustrious Engineer Carlos Gaspar, winner in 1973 and record holder of the Track
The Circuit of Vila Real, where I had the pleasure of running in Tourism classes (Alfa Romeo GTA), GT (Ford GT40), Formula 3 (Brabham BT21) and Sport-Prototypes (Lola T-280 in 1972 and Lola T-292 in 1973) has always been, for me and for riders who met in European countries where I had the pleasure of defending the Portuguese colors, one of the greatest of those times.
And one of the great, apart from the unusual perimeter of its track, and the speed and beauty and danger that it had, which at that time were the elements of motor sport, in order to be considered “younger brother” of the famous Nurburgring that was on top of unparalleled class of European tracks.
But, if I may say something with a furtive tear, especially the wonderful 1973 and the absolute record that I still have today next to my heart, 2m19s120 average of 178.173 km / h, the town was superior to all the other tracks known by its people, for its determination to be the best, the warmth that welcomed pilots, mechanics and cars, and the undisguised vanity of having us in their environment. Not to mention the traditional “beyond the Marão”.

One of the cars that is remembered with more nostalgia among the Portuguese fans is certainly the Ford GT40 chassis P / 1022 Carlos Gaspar, Carlos Santos and Luis Fernandes used in national tests between 1968 and 70. Today we recall the career of this wonderful car in our country.
The GT40 # P / 1022 was acquired by Scottish Nick Cuthbert on 24 November 1965. It was red with black interior, was equipped with the usual Borrani wheels (6-inch and ½ ahead and 8 above). It was built with racing specifications and was equipped with a V8 Ford engine type type “Cobra 289″ with 4.7 cylinder. A white band was soon added to the center of the hood and the car entered by Cuthbert team in many trials of the English Car Sport Championship (BSCC) driven by the Scot Eric Liddell.

In 1971, a time when Portugal was still a colonial power, the BIP (Portuguese Intercontinental Bank) was a banking structure with huge world value.
At one point, it launched the idea of making a racing team. The main driver of the project at its inception, was João Carlos Ferreira de Moura, pilot who had participated in national tests at the wheel of cars like the Jaguar E. The owner of the Bank at the time, Jorge de Brito (would later be President of Benfica ) wanted the chief pilot and “manager” of the operation was the celebrated pilot of Porto Carlos Gaspar, individual known for his talent as a pilot and its organizational capacity and expertise (Engineering course taken in England).
